The learning progressions will be helpful in guiding my students in the right direction. At the beginning of kindergarten most of them are starting at ground zero. I liked the “consider your methods of instruction” on page 71. After reading through them, I think that I will mainly focus on using demonstration and guided practice. For my students, I can see that modeling and giving lots of examples and visual support for them to refer back to, will give them the most support to start with. I want to start teaching them about what a checklist is, and how to use it to help them reach their goals. It is always so challenging at the beginning of the school year. Some of them are not able to write their name yet. They have not begun to read, so everything is drawing and dictation. I try to do as much modeling as I can when they are dictating. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find out that our school is not using the Lucy Calkins Writing Kits. We use a book called Talking, Drawing, and Writing, and another called Explorations in Non-Fiction Writing. Lucy’s Unit of Study series really looks like a good resource. I would like to find out more about it, and maybe I could talk them into trying it next year.
ReplyDeleteUsing writing across content areas is a good teaching resource for kindergarten. We have limited time in our short day, using writing in other areas such as math, science, and social studies helps to give them more practice with their writing skills. It also gives them a way to record thoughts and ideas about what they are thinking and learning. I liked the idea of continuing to use their checklist when writing in other content. It will help them to keep some focus on their writing goals they are working on. The beginning of the school year is always a bit overwhelming. This book has given me a lot to think about as I plan out my lessons and how I want to approach teaching them how to become writers.
